STONECAT NATURE RESERVES is a North Wales, UK, based enterprise where all profits are used to fund practical conservation projects.

Over the years, Stonecat Nature Reserves has had several names, each reflecting its role at that point and demanding change as it expanded. This growth continues today.

Starting out in the 1990s, SNR as it is now, was involved in an experiment, donating batches of tree saplings to schools in parts of Greater Manchester. Demand was brilliant and soon it became obvious that there existed a great thirst for trees.

Research demonstrated that people wanted 'instant' trees and little or no paperwork. Clearly the grant system for tree planting in the UK was failing and by definition also, the environment was suffering.

It was resolved to satisfy this demand, by establishing this enterprise, financed via fund raising. With funding, saplings could be produced and simply donated.

Since then, SNR has evolved, harvesting and donating vegetative cuttings of cloned varieties of high conservation value, super fast growing willow and poplar species. This technology is rapidly expanding in the search for quick growing material to fuel wood burning power stations.

Thus, applicants can obtain saplings which will grow 6 to 10 feet in a year for little more than a letter of request for a donation.

Applications are restricted to one per qualifying organisation/individual per annum.

An applicant can apply for up to 50 saplings of either willow or poplar in multiples of ten.

Applicants pay only for postage which is usually around £2 - £3 and is clearly marked on the Royal Mail frank and on the packaging.

SNR pays for the postage in advance and recipients must reimburse SNR with the cost of postage within seven days of receiving the trees.
SNR will accept cheque, Postal Order or postage stamps.

WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR SNR.
SNR has a ceiling of 10,000 saplings per annum for donation to bone fide organisations and individuals engaged in tree planting.

Those planting trees in public places or, places which are visible to the public, will obtain priority in their applications.

In exchange for the donation, SNR requires something in return.

Upon receiving your donation of saplings, there will be enclosed, details of an SNR advertiser who ultimately has funded in part or whole, the donation. Within 28 days of receiving plants, recipients must write a simple letter of thanks to the named advertiser and send a copy of such to SNR.

This can be by traditional post or email.

Some but not all recipients may be asked (on occasion) to attach a label to some saplings carrying details of SNR. These will be supplied.

The communication with a named advertiser is essential and is a condition of receiving a donation.

Failure to co-operate will be regarded as a breach of contract for which SNR reserves the right to pursue the cost of the saplings.
